Future-driven branding for a forward-thinking movement

The Defi Education Fund (DEF) is a nonprofit organization dedicated to helping policymakers, academics, and the public understand the benefits and potential of decentralized finance. As the DeFi landscape evolved, DEF needed a refreshed visual identity that could communicate credibility to policy audiences while still resonating with the innovators and technologists driving the space forward. They turned to SJI for our expertise in branding, design, and web development to create a cohesive system that could bring clarity, sophistication, and energy to all their touchpoints.

CHALLENGE
As DEF’s role in shaping the future of decentralized finance grew, the organization needed a visual identity that reflected its expanding influence and diverse audiences. The goal was to create a look that felt both credible to policymakers and inspiring to innovators — a system that could capture the complexity of DeFi while remaining clear, confident, and engaging.

INSIGHT
While DeFi is built on code and cryptography, its broader story is about transparency, innovation, and access. To connect with both policymakers and programmers, the brand needed to express these ideas visually — bridging technical depth with institutional credibility.

APPROACH
We created a bright, open-ended design system centered around the blocks from DEF’s existing logo — a nod to the blockchain. These modular elements became the foundation for a flexible graphic language that connects DEF’s technical roots to its real-world policy impact. By combining these shapes with imagery of Washington, D.C., technology, and policymaking, we brought a sense of humanity and relevance to a complex topic.

 

Logo Redesign
DEF’s original mark featured a subtle “book” motif symbolizing knowledge and education, topped by three blocks representing the blockchain technology that underpins the decentralized finance ecosystem. In refining the logo, we leaned more deliberately into the DEF acronym while preserving a clear connection to the organization’s full name. Adjustments to proportion and legibility enhance its geometric strength, resulting in a cleaner, more contemporary mark that maintains continuity with DEF’s origins.

Visual Identity
The visual system combines blocks and gradients to evoke motion, connection, and the layering inherent in blockchain technology, with embedded code used as an Easter egg—an homage to crypto’s playfulness. Photography grounds the abstract visuals with images of policymaking and technological progress, creating an engaging balance between the conceptual and the concrete.

 

Color Palette
The new color palette balances innovation with trust. A distinctive mix of greens, blues, and dark grays conveys the dual nature of DeFi — vibrant and forward-looking, yet serious and reliable. The palette supports versatility across digital, print, and presentation contexts.

Icon System
To support DEF’s growing range of communications, we developed a flexible icon system derived directly from the core geometry of the logo. By remixing and recombining its modular block elements, we created a set of icons that feel both familiar and dynamic. The system maintains visual consistency across policy briefs, digital platforms, and presentations while allowing variation and expressiveness, reinforcing DEF’s identity as both structured and forward-thinking.

Website
We brought the new identity to life through a redesigned website that mirrors DEF’s clarity and purpose. The site organizes information and resources for both policy audiences and DeFi developers, presenting them through a clean interface and a cohesive visual language.

 

Photography Palette
The photography palette grounds DEF’s abstract, technical subject matter in real-world context. We curated evocative imagery of Washington, D.C., legislative environments, and coding culture—reframed through DEF’s distinctive color palette to unify disparate subjects into a cohesive visual language. Subtle overlays of DeFi-inspired code add depth and texture, reinforcing the connection between policy, technology, and decentralized systems without overwhelming the imagery.
